The U.P. Film Union has been hosting a monthly Film Club since November 2018. The Film Club is similar to a book club but with instant satisfaction. Instead of waiting a month to get together to discuss the film, the discussion occurs immediately after the movie is finished.Have you ever watched a great movie but didn't have someone to discuss it with? Film Club will take care of that problem for you! Come out, watch a variety of films, and discuss the films immediately after watching! All participants can recommend up to two movies to have in our monthly lottery. If unable to attend a specific event, a participant's movies will be left out of the lottery to ensure the group will only be watching the chosen movies when the participant is present. If a movie is chosen, that participant's movies will be left out of the lottery for the following three months, and at that time one movie can be suggested. After six months if a movie hasn't been chosen the same participant will be able to again have two movies in the lottery. This is simply to safeguard having one person's movies always chosen. We at the Film Union like to spread the love! We also encourage changing any movie you have selected from month to month. There is a yearly $25 membership fee to be a member of the Film Club. In addition, each event there is a fee of $10 per participant. With your event fee, you will receive as much freshly popped popcorn as you can eat, but most importantly, you will experience the most exciting movie-going experience around! Film Club is designed to be a fundraiser for the Hwy 2 Community Drive-In Theater; we appreciate your help to keep the U.P.'s ONLY drive-in theater open!
We have established a process to qualify movies for Film Club. The criteria is as follows:
Film Club movies must have a score that exceeds 200 using the sum of the Tomatometer score and the Audience score from Rotten Tomatoes (rottentomatoes.com) and the score from Metacritic (metacritic.com). We have found that some films are not rated by Metacritic. If this is the case with your film its Metacritic score will default to 50.
We ask to please not select films with run times that exceed two hours.
All film genres are welcome.
Of course, if you have any questions about Film Club please don't hesitate to contact a U.P. Film Union representative at [email protected] or by phone at 906-356-3711.
